Russian Tiles
Project type
Ceramic
Date
Sep 2021
This series of four ceramic tiles explores the same imagery through varying textures and both additive and subtractive methods. Each tile depicts a man sitting on a stool, dressed in a fur coat and mittens, with one shoe on his foot and the other on the floor. He sips tea while warming his foot by an open fire. Nearby, a stove with a kettle rests, and meat hangs in the background, evoking a sense of warmth amidst the cold. Inspired by Russian culture, the cold weather, and traditional attire, as well as the familiar foods of this environment, the tiles each offer a unique interpretation of this intimate winter scene. Using different techniques and textures, I. aim to convey the quiet comforts of home and the resilience of living in harsh climates, highlighting both the simplicity and richness of this cultural moment. They were also a part of QCC's 2022 Juried Student Exhibition which took place in the QCC Art Gallery!
